Review: Shadowrun

I’m pleased to announce that Shadowrun, my first Skullkids review, is ready for viewing over on that lonely tab between “Other” and “Articles.” Fans of magical, gun toting metahuman carnage gather round as I tell you why you should visit Santos Brazil. And no matter how dangerous they may be, a dwarf with a Minigun looks silly.

In other news, I’ve waited patiently since 1998 for a genuine Cubone cake. These kids today, with their Mudkip cakes… Spoiled rotten, I say! Brilliant Mudkip cake, nonetheless.

Cake: Mudkip
True story: The original name for this site over ten years ago now was Gaming Cake.

So yeah, we're just as cool as other blogs out there! You know the ones, they post YouTube videos and cakes and all sorts of random guff that people apparently care about! Not one to oppose demand, I present our first awesome cake post.

Look at it. Look at the awesome of the cake. We heard you like Mudkips, so scoured the world in search of the ultimate Mudkip cake. And here it is! Apparently it's so good because "it was a group effort". The team leader was some guy called Itchy Nox, so not only is he a great cake maker but he's also a Stargate fan!

9/10

News: Xbox 360 Live Activity

Now as you may know I LOVE top 10s, positively adore them on all fronts, mainly because people expect something new and unusual, and then they read them only to find out that they're really quite predictable.

Now anyone who watches things like E3 press conferences, or who reads press releases (and believe me, we do) knows how Microsoft loves to talk about diversifying its product catalogue. This is wonderful news to us all, I mean we absolutely want casual shovelware, and Barbie Horse Princess 2, they let us live out fantasies we never even knew we had. So let's judge how successful this diversification is, shall we?

Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (based on Unique Users)
1 Call of Duty 4
2 Halo 3
3 Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2
4 Guitar Hero III
5 Gears of War
6 Rock Band
7 Army of Two
8 Forza Motorsport 2
9 FIFA 08
10 Madden NFL 08

Ho, ho, ho. Military shooters, sports games, and a driving game. Frankly only two titles here are worth putting in the "Diversification" realm and they are Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3; frankly at this point I'm not sure they even count as casual games, really.

Frankly I'll be glad if Nintendo or Sony ever begin publishing something like this, it's a good excuse to have a laugh at their expense AND be informative all at the same time. Oh, and the only reason Mime isn't posting this is because he's depressed that Sega Superstars Tennis isn't in there yet.

Skullkids New Best Friend
Our new best friend is Simon Smith-Wright, the "UK PR Director" at EA.

Not only did he read the email that we sent him about Rock Band, but he even responded! This is a first for us. Lewis Digby (Nintendo's UK PR) just sends us templated stuff, but Simon Smith-Wright is great and actually typed his response up.

We've asked him if we can be friends on Xbox Live but he has yet to respond. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Oh, and no news on Rock Band, in case you were wondering.

News: World of Warcraft Patch 2.4

While we don't normally post news about patches, given how many there are and everything, we felt this one was special enough to get a mention.

Today sees the launch of the latest and final patch for World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. Called Fury of the Sunwell, players can expect an entirely new zone called the Isle of Quel'danas. As well as a metric arseload of new daily quests, the zone also contains two new dungeons. 5-man teams can take on Kaelthas in the Magisters Terrace while 25-man teams can investigate The Sunwell. Of course, all the usual class balancing, additional items, arena crap, and all that jazz will be there too.

So, with this patch marking the ending of The Burning Crusade, does that mean we might soon start seeing a release date for Wrath of the Lich King? We can but hope!

News: Idiot Talks About Digital Distribution and "The Death of Consoles"

Now, we here at Skullkids have a policy on items like this, the policy is this: If somone makes an absolutely stupid comment then we are allowed to mock anything else they say for the next six months regardless of its sanity, usefulness, or newsworthiness.

Today, ladies and gentlemen, Alex St. John (CEO of WildTangent Software, co-creator of DirectX, so on, so forth) has joined the list of people whose comments will be repeated at them in silly voices even as they say, the list of people who are acceptable targets for "Yo' Momma" jokes, and the list of people who are so mind bogglingly out of touch with the real world that the very fabric of reality twists around them just so it can see what they're going to do next.

Mr St. John, you see, has decided to open his big gob not just to put a cigar in it, oh no, but to comment on the state of consoles. He has decided that this will be the last generation of consoles, despite saying the Wii is making money hand over fist. He says that there were two high profile failures of market leaders that have stymied gaming, in fact, he says this in relation to Sega:

"They were leaders, everything they did—they could do no wrong, and boom, they're gone. "

Now quite apart from the fact that Sega's "stymying" of the market was caused by the advent of Playstation (you know, the biggest console phenomenon to hit the face of the planet), and the fact they were never market leaders, AND the fact that Sega's decline was slow and perillous, not just overnight we have the fact that this man is clinically insane.

Frankly I'm just going to link to the original article rather than move onto his wacky theories about digital distribution. This way any interested authorities can go and fetch him for a nice rest in a rubber-walled room for 7 or 8 years without me having to drone on any longer.

News: Halo 3 Maps Now Free

Remember in December when Bungie released the new Heroic Map Pack for their little indie game, Halo 3? Remember when they said they would be free at some point in the future? Well the future is now! If you thought the cost of 800 points was too much for new maps, maybe you'll be more tempted by the new cost of 0 points.

The Heroic Map Pack actually contains three new maps which have been given the names of Standoff, Rats Nest and Foundry. Though they're probably good, you'll still get your arse kicked by the guys that play the game far too much causing you to get frustrated again and not touch the game once more until the next map pack is free.
